J. Mark Salazar
Vice President of Operations for the Southeast Region
For J. Mark Salazar, military training is an on-the-job asset. His education at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1985) and his service as an aviation officer in the U.S. Army set the stage for his career in telecommunications.
"There definitely is a value to the company in finding experienced leaders and soldiers either on the management or the associate side," Mark said. "We benefit from them. They are mature, responsible and eager, and most are self-motivated."
Mark believes Frontier's focus on hiring military veterans is a winning strategy. The military, he continued, provides men and women with an understanding of organizational structure, accountability and responsibility – traits that are critical to the success of any organization.
After serving 11 years on active duty in he Army, where he piloted CH-47 helicopters and served as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander, Mark joined Bell Atlantic Maryland in 1996. He served in a variety of management positions in engineering, construction and operations in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Mark transitioned from Verizon to Frontier Communications during the 2010 acquisition and joined the Southeast Region's management team in Charleston, W.Va.
A native of New Mexico, Mark, 48, holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from West Point and a master's degree in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University. After leaving active duty, which took him to tours in Germany, Special Operations and with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., Mark served an additional five years in the Army Reserves.
Mark and his wife, Cinda, have two sons, Jon Marc, a freshman at West Virginia University, and Ian, a high school student.
