"How to Self-Install Your Frontier Router" Transcript

Hi and welcome to the High Speed Internet installation video.

Today I'm going to show you how to self-install your router right there in your home. It's an easy process and if you choose self-installation you'll save money. In this video I'm going to show you what parts should have come with your self-installation kit, how to set it all up properly, how to know when your service is running correctly, and some questions and troubleshooting ideas. And if anything isn't working for you, you can always call the Internet Help Desk at 1.800.239.4430 and we’ll be there to help. For most of our customers this entire process will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Just remember, before you start, do not plug in your router until all of the other steps are complete. Now let's open your box and verify that all the equipment is there. You should find a Netgear 7550 router and its power supply.

Second, your Ethernet cable. This will either be yellow or blue in color, your DSL telephone cable, and three inline filters. Even if you're going to connect wirelessly eventually, for the initial installation you're going to want to use your Ethernet cable. Now, if you're not replacing dial-up service or another Internet service provider just go ahead and skip ahead to the part where we're installing the phone filters.

Now, if you're replacing dial-up or another Internet service provider, it's important to first de-install the other provider. If you have dial-up service you'll want to pull the telephone cord out of the telephone jack in the wall and take the other end of the telephone cord out of the back of your PC. Set that telephone cord aside you won't need it any longer. If you're with another High Speed Internet provider, you'll need to remove their router and equipment. In order to do that, take the Ethernet cord that is plugged into the back of your PC and remove it. Set it with the old router and set the entire package aside.

It's possible that you may be replacing another Frontier router with a new one, in that case you want to simply take the Ethernet cord out the back of the router, set the router aside, take your new router and put the Ethernet cable back in. Just on the side, it's important to note that you should put your Ethernet cable into ports 2, 3, or 4. Do not put it into port 1 when you’re setting up your modem.

Your new 7550 has wireless capabilities which will allow you to connect any number of laptops, tablets, smartphones, wirelessly into your network.

We'll now install your phone filters. Phone filters separate your DSL signal from your telephone, answering machine, or fax. In order to install a filter, simply insert it into the wall jack where your High Speed internet service is. Then take your telephone cord and plug it into the telephone side of the inline filter. Listen for a good solid click with every connection.

These filters are very important, if you don't use the filters you may have some degradation in either your voice service or in your High Speed Internet service. You've been provided three of them in your welcome kit. More are available, including wall mount filters by calling the Internet Help Desk at 1.800.239.4430.

One other thing, if your phone jack is not in use do not install a filter. Only have the filters on the phone jacks that are in use.

Now let's connect the router. In order to connect the router I'm going to go ahead and turn the PC around so we can see what's going on behind.

Take your Ethernet cable, which will be yellow or blue in color and note the difference between your Ethernet cable and your DSL telephone cable. The head on the Ethernet cable is significantly wider than the DSL telephone cable. The Ethernet cord fits into the Ethernet port on the back of the PC. Listen for that good solid click and then put the Ethernet cord into ports 2, 3, or 4 on the modem. Remember you don't want to use port 1 when you're setting up your service.

Now take your DSL cord. The DSL cord goes into the leftmost port on your router. The other end will go into the DSL port on your filter, which you previously installed. Take the power supply, it goes into the rightmost port. Make sure that the switch is turned off, and then you can plug that into an electrical outlet.

Now you're ready. Turn the switch on. The lights will begin to flash. Power light first. When the DSL light stops flashing and goes solid, congratulations you have Internet service.

If after two minutes the DSL light is still blinking, go back and recheck all your connections. Make sure the connections are good. If that doesn't help, call us at the Internet Help Desk, 1.800.239.4430, and we'll be glad to help.
