Outlook Express


Outlook Express is no longer available or supported by Microsoft and is not intended for use on computers with Windows 7 or 8, or Mac OS X. However, if you are using it, these are the instructions you need. Select your software version below for complete SMTP Authentication instructions.

To enable SMTP Authentication in Outlook Express (Version 5 or 6) for Windows:

  1. Open Outlook Express and click Tools.



  2. Select Account Settings from the menu.



  3. Select the Mail tab at the top of the Internet Accounts window and click Properties.

    Note: If you receive email from a provider other than Frontier, the Name may differ from what appears in the image below.



  4. Select the Servers tab at the top of the window that appears.

    Note:If you receive email from a provider other than Frontier, the Name may differ from what appears in the image below.



  5. Look at the Incoming mail (POP3) and Outgoing mail (SMTP) fields.



    • If your Incoming mail (POP3) is set to:
      • pop3.frontier.com
      • pop3.frontiernet.net
      • pop3.citlink.net
      • pop3.newnorth.net or
      • in.epix.net
      make sure that your complete Frontier, FrontierNet, Citlink, Newnorth, or Epix email address is present in the Account name field in the Incoming Mail Server section.
    • If your Incoming mail (POP3) is set to mail.ctaz.com, your CTAZ email address should be placed in the Account name field in the Incoming Mail Server section in the format of: username@citlink.net (replacing ctaz.com with citlink.net). Please note, this will not change your email address.
    • If your Incoming mail (POP3) is set to something other than:
      • pop3.frontier.com
      • pop3.frontiernet.net
      • pop3.citlink.net
      • mail.ctaz.com
      • pop3.newnorth.net or
      • in.epix.net
      no changes are needed.
    • If your Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to:
      • smtp.frontier.com
      • smtp.frontiernet.net
      • smtp.citlink.net
      • mail.ctaz.com
      • smtp.newnorth.net or
      • out.epix.net
      place a checkmark in the box to the left of My server requires authentication. Do not select Log on using Secure Password Authentication. Click the Settings button.
    • If your Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to something other than:
      • smtp.frontier.com
      • smtp.frontiernet.net
      • smtp.citlink.net
      • smtp.newnorth.net
      • mail.ctaz.com or
      • out.epix.net
      no changes are needed.
    • If you were not instructed to click the Settings button, skip to Step 7.
  6. Select Log on using and enter your complete Frontier, FrontierNet, Citlink / CTAZ, Newnorth, or Epix email address in the Account name field. If your email address is in the format of username@ctaz.com, change ctaz.com to citlink.net (example: username@ctaz.com becomes username@citlink.net). Please note, this will not change your email address. Next, enter the password for this email address in the Password field. Do not select Log on using Secure Password Authentication. Click OK.



  7. Click Apply at the bottom of the window (if it is available), and the click OK.



  8. Click Close.

To enable SMTP Authentication in Outlook Express v.5 for Macintosh:

Note: Customers using Mac OS 8 or 9 and Outlook Express for the Mac releases that are prior to version 5.0.6 will need to upgrade their Outlook Express to version 5.0.6 for SMTP Authentication to function properly. To obtain Outlook Express version 5.0.6, go to www.microsoft.com.

  1. Open Outlook Express and click Tools > Accounts.



  2. On the Mail tab of the Accounts window, click to select your Frontier mail account and click Edit.



  3. On the Account Settings tab of the Edit Account window, look at the Receiving mail and Sending mail sections.



    • If your Receiving mail POP server is set to:
      • pop3.frontier.com
      • pop3.frontiernet.net
      • pop3.citlink.net or
      • pop3.newnorth.net
      make sure that your complete Frontier, FrontierNet, Citlink, Newnorth, or Epix email address is present in the Account ID field.
    • If your Receiving mail POP server is set to mail.ctaz.com, make sure your Account ID is in the format of username@citlink.net (replacing ctaz.com with citlink.net). Please note, this will not change your email address.
    • If your Receiving mail POP server is set to something other than:
      • pop3.frontier.com
      • pop3.frontiernet.net
      • pop3.citlink.net
      • mail.ctaz.com
      • pop3.newnorth.net or
      • in.epix.net
      no changes are needed.
    • If your Sending mail SMTP server is set to:
      • smtp.frontier.com
      • smtp.frontiernet.net
      • smtp.citlink.net
      • mail.ctaz.com
      • smtp.newnorth.net or
      • out.epix.net
      select Click here for advanced sending options.
    • If your Sending mail SMTP server is set to something other than:
      • smtp.frontier.com
      • smtp.frontiernet.net
      • smtp.citlink.net
      • mail.ctaz.com
      • smtp.newnorth.net or
      • out.epix.net
      no changes are needed.
    • If you were not instructed to select Click here for advanced sending options, skip to Step 5.
  4. Make sure that a checkmark is placed in the field to the left of SMTP server requires authentication. Log on using should be selected, and you'll need to enter your complete Frontier, FrontierNet, Citlink, Newnorth or Epix email address in the Account ID field.

    If your email address is in the format of username@ctaz.com, change ctaz.com to citlink.net (example: username@ctaz.com becomes username@citlink.net). Please note, this will not change your email address. Next, make sure the password for this account is entered in the Password field. Click the square in the upper left corner of the window when complete.



  5. Click OK. Select Save if you are asked to save your changes.
