When you pick up your phone to make a call, you may hear a "stutter tone".
This means you have a new voicemail message. A stutter tone sounds like a dial tone going on and off a few times, quickly. Then it changes to a normal dial tone.

Wait 2 or 3 seconds for the stutter tone to stop and become a normal, steady dial tone.
Start your call only when you hear the steady dial tone.

Another type of alert signal is a fast dial tone.
A fast dial tone is an intermittent beeping sound. It lets you know you've left your phone off the hook.

It’s possible your phone isn’t registering all the numbers you’re pushing. Do you need to dial the area code for a local call? Did you remember to dial a 1 before the area code? Double check your dialing and try dialing again.
